12:01amAg Football Preview: #19 Missouri
Each week it seems like it's a big game, but really, they are when the program has been in the state it has been for the last few years. Mizzou comes into Kyle Field this weekend off to their best start in 33 years with a 6-0 record. Their defense has been stellar and their sophomore QB Chase Daniels (a product of the powerhouse Southlake Carroll dynasty) has won over the Tiger faithful.
Chase is completing 64.3% of his passes and already has 14 TDs (to 5 INTs) and is averaging 241 yards in the air through 6 games. Their running game is led by Tony Temple who has 563 yards and 2 TDs on 103 carries (5.5 ypc). Daniel is their second leading rusher with 167 yards on 65 carries and leads the team in rushing TDs with 3.
Daniel has been able to spread the ball around really well. They have 5 receivers with 15 or more catches and are led by William Franklin with 29 (for 484 yards and 4 TDs). TE Chase Coffman also has 4 TDs from his 23 receptions.
Their overall offensive numbers actually compare fairly closely with ours.
MU TA ===================== Pts/g 34.2 34.5 P-yd/g 244.8 208.7 R-yd/g 179.0 203.3 T-yd/g 423.8 412.0While Missouri is 6-0, I must say that prior to last weekend's texas tech game they played a fairly weak schedule. They did take tech to the woodshed in lubbock after forcing a bunch of turnovers.
When you hear people talk about Mizzou you hear them mention Chase Daniel then they mention their defense. I was looking at their opponents and I thought to myself, "Self, those teams they play don't have very good offenses, do they?" After a quick trip to the national rankings list I concluded that I was correct.
Mizzou Opponent's Total Offense vMU Season (rnk) ================================== Murray State 150 285 (I-AA) Ole Miss 163 259 (109) New Mexico 201 286 (100) Ohio 188 256 (110) Colorado 373 270 (108) texas tech 456 437 (12)They've played 5 of their 6 games against teams who's offenses are as bad as our defense was last season. They actually got lit up by CU and then gave up a good chunk of yards to tech. I thought that was interesting.
That's all I've got time for. I'm hoping for a 2004 Okie State type result against a team who, like OSU, was starting to gain some national attention but might be a bit overrated.

8:59amBryce Reed Story
Just wanted to point out a great article on Bryce Reed from this morning's Dallas Morning News.
I had no idea but Reed has been raising his brother and working on top of his football obligations. Good kid.
I'm going to try and get up my Mizzou Preview tomorrow morning but today is going to be kinda crazy so it might not be until later.

2:06pmOne Thing I Won't Miss When I Graduate
As I sit here at the SCC typing this, my toes are shriveling up. It rained here in College Station this morning and yet again the drainage system on campus failed me.
Is it too much to ask that after 15 minutes of decent rain I not have to rent a paddle boat to get to class? The water puddles up 3-4" across almost every single sidewalk and don't even think about trying to cross the a street unless you are tied securely to a stationary object because the current will sweep you away.
I got to the library from the bus stop and when I walked in I ran into 3 of my buddies who I have previously expressed my displeasure on the matter. They just laughed when they saw me coming.
I was so angry that I told one of them that if I ever met the guy who designed the campus drainage that I'd just punch him right in the nose. My buddy quickly added that he would hold him for me.
I will not miss trying to cross campus in the rain (or even after the rain). [/end rant]

10:50amAgs Pull Away with a W in Lawrence, 21-18
We eeked out a W on the road. It was far from pretty but it was enough.
I want to start by saying I thought the defense played spectacular. Only 113 yards on the ground and 175 yards through the air. They knew that Cornish was going to get his 100+ yards on the ground but they didn't let him dominate them and they kept KU's passing game in check. 48 of those 175 passing yards were really on special teams when KU ran a fake punt. The only TD we gave up was a couple plays following that 48 yard punt fake which put KU inside the 10 yard line.
Justin Warren, Misi Tupe, & Devin GreggJustin Warren had a huge game with 13 tackles including several for a loss. Misi Tupe also had a nice afternoon. Statistically, it wasn't special but the guy is all over the place and that helped him pick up a fumble recovery. The defensive play of the game was easy to pick out which was made by my boy, Devin Gregg (West-FIELD!). On 3rd & 1 with 3:46 left in the game and a 4 point lead Kansas handed off to Cornish and Devin made a big hit to keep Cornish from the first down and force the punt that would give us possession and the opportunity to win the game.
The offense looked horrible on 9 of our 13 possessions. The best possession was the last one when we marched 80 yards for the game winning Jorvorskie TD leaving 34 seconds on the clock.
I mentioned it last week but I saw it again this week. Several times Stephen McGee had time to throw the ball but flushed himself out of the pocket a little too soon and either threw the ball away or ran for a yard or two. I've also noticed that he is struggling with zeroing in on his first intended receiver. If that guy is covered, he'll start to scramble. He simply doesn't see lots of guys down the field who are wide open. I understand that he is young and inexperienced but it is something that we need to improve on.
Stephen finished the afternoon with a career high 45 attempts completing 25 of them for 240 yards. He certainly spread the ball around hitting Earvin Taylor 7 times (for 43 yards), Martellus 6 times (for 67 yards) and Chad Schroeder 5 times (for 49 yards). We had a total of 8 players with a reception.
One of the problems on offense was our starting field position. 3 times we started with the ball inside our own 10 yard line. That requires long drives that we just weren't able to put together. A second problem was penalties. We had numerous false start flags thrown that just killed us. The third problem is that we seem to refuse to throw the ball vertically down the field, which is something that has bothered me throughout the season. Our long pass of the afternoon was a 35 yard screen pass.
That screen pass was a HUGE one on our last drive of the afternoon. On a 3rd & 5, KU brought the house on the blitz and McGee hit Ty Riley right at the line of scrimmage and he just ran right through open field down to the 5 yard line. Jorvorskie punched in his second TD of the afternoon two plays later to give us the lead.
The running game was much less of a factor. Mike Goodson led the team with 79 yards on 8 carries (9.9 ypc) and Jorvorskie had 10 carries for 48 yards and two more TDs. J-Train has 13 on the season though six games and with six more regular season games remaining he is going to make a run at the school's 79 year old record of 19 in a season (Joel Hunt in 1927). They mentioned on the broadcast that this season on 3rd & 4th down Jorvorskie has either picked up the first down or the TD on 17 of 20 attempts. That's not too shabby. There was no sighting of C-Lew at all.
Next weekend a very solid Mizzou team comes down to College Station. Last night they just flat out beat the tar out of tech in lubbock. It was 24-0 before the middle of the second quarter. We cannot come out and play like garbage in the first quarter against Mizzou as we have on several other occassions this season. ABC is picking up the game and it is going to be a 2:30pm kickoff. Gig'em Ags.
